Week 3 of 2024 : DEI + AI = ____ |
I spent most of last week at the PCUAD conference where two themes were most prevalent: DEI and AI. What was most interesting about it was how wonderfully, terrifyingly intersectional those topics are. |
AI may save time on some menial tasks, sure, and that's most of the demos you'll see. What you don't see is a tradeoff in quality, a compromised human connection, amplified bias, and a seemingly relentless charge toward removing human variability from the creative process. A black box that cannot be explained (by design, no less!) should never be at the center of a deterministic system. And that's exactly where AI's evolution goes from here. |
The people doing the building, the training, and the application of these tools has to be as diverse as those impacted by them or the benefits will accrue unevenly - exacerbating the very inequities that education is intended to address. |
As engagement professionals you know that who's in the room matters very much. Is there a human at the door or is it simply a pattern-matching machine giving you more of the same? |
We have so much to learn and it would be wise to do that before jumping in with two feet. We're exploring the space with intentional caution. |
Spring Season Staff Support |
If you haven't already, you will hear soon from your account manager. We're also going to add their contact info (and onsite support team names if available) to the admin console for quick reference. |
In a City Near You |
Steve will be out at Lawrence University and Case Western Reserve University this week. Who electively flies to the midwest in January? |
